Abstract
Instructors in various disciplines must struggle with questions of self-disclosure of their experiences and beliefs, especially when discussing controversial or difficult issues in the classroom. Research and writing on this topic, primarily written for teachers of psychology and related disciplines, rather than toward a general audience of instructors, is reviewed. In addition, research on therapist self-disclosure in clinical settings, which has some parallels with instructor self-disclosure in teaching settings, is reviewed. Both bodies of literature are used to offer guidelines to instructors from any subject-matter as they make decisions about self-disclosure to students.
