Abstract
Teaching and learning history through film is neither new nor novel, but rather a visual medium that has been used in classrooms for generations. Despite a long tradition of usage, however, myriad challenges can preclude pedagogical effectiveness. Developing lesson ideas that are mindful of the tenants of both media and visual literacy offers teachers solutions to many of those challenges. This chapter endeavors to advance that important conversation through a practical discussion of two approaches that purposefully incorporate the visual medium of Hollywood film into the K-12 classroom. Authors provide a rich description of related instructional strategies and lesson plans.
